VANCOUVER, BC: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) is seeking intervener status in the court case over the future of the Trans Mountain Pipeline project in British Columbia.
“Our modern way of life and our economic prosperity depend on oil and gas in Canada and the BC government should stop blocking this federally approved pipeline,” said Kris Sims, BC Director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. “We are going to bat for taxpayers in this fight because without a robust economy, and without access to affordable oil and gas, people in BC won’t be able to drive to work, the cost of everything will surge and they won’t be able to pay the taxes that our governments impose on us. This pipeline needs to be built – we cannot afford to play these games.”
The CTF is also seeking intervener standing in Saskatchewan, where the provincial government is asking the courts to decide whether the federal government can impose a carbon tax.
“It is critical that the interests of everyday Canadian taxpayers be represented in these proceedings,” said CTF Federal Director Aaron Wudrick.
Wudrick noted that clarifying the appropriate spheres of federal and provincial jurisdiction will serve to enhance political accountability, by allowing Canadians to hold the proper level of government accountable for their policy choices.
The CTF will be filing the intervener applications over the coming weeks.
